Board approves personnel resolution, routine policies and field trip; superintendent reports summer projects and staffing

On actions, the board approved minutes from prior meetings and followed the superintendent’s recommendations to approve July 2024 bills and a field trip for FFA students to Springfield, Massachusetts. The board also adopted a resolution authorizing the superintendent to reassign principals and other personnel for the 2024–25 year pursuant to Virginia Code §22.1-297. Policies JHCF (non-school employees working in schools) and JFCF (alcohol and drugs in school) were presented for action and adopted as presented.
Dr. Shiflett reported the district had hired 104 new teachers (43 first-year teachers) and that preliminary enrollment counts showed roughly 250 more students than last year pending final verification. Superintendent updates listed facility work across the division, including a completed Broadway High School addition, sewer plant startup at Lynnville Eden Elementary, design work on Elkton Elementary renovations, LED lighting upgrades, playground fencing and track resurfacing across multiple schools. Food-service changes were announced: 14 schools will participate in the federal Community Eligibility Provision, providing free breakfast and lunch to those campuses.
Eric Baylor presented options for ticketing events (cash, GoFan credit/phone orders and phone orders), noting GoFan charges a $1 processing fee per ticket; the board directed activity directors to track student versus non-student attendance if the district explores free student admission.
What’s next: Staff will implement the approved policies and begin school-year communications; the board entered closed session at the meeting’s end to discuss personnel and student-specific issues.
