Fairfax highlights preliminary gains from three-week PowerUp Algebra summer program

Fairfax County Public Schools staff presented early results from a three-week PowerUp Algebra program designed to accelerate students from seventh-grade content into Algebra 1 in eighth grade.
Presenters said preliminary data show roughly 74.5% of targeted eighth-graders were enrolled in Algebra 1 and that internal slides projected that percentage to about 75%. Staff reported the countywide figure of students taking Algebra in eighth grade represents approximately 10,000 students.
The summer program was described as hands-on, integrating executive-function strategies and AVID-aligned practices; teachers and special-education staff provided supports and interventions for students needing additional help. Board members praised the initiative but asked for more granular data, including breakdowns for multilingual students and students with disabilities, and requested written reports that tie program spending to measurable outcomes.
Staff said they will continue to collect and publish data, and board members encouraged maintaining Algebra access across middle schools and ensuring credentials and teacher training are in place to sustain the expansion.
No policy vote occurred on the PowerUp program during the meeting; staff said future reports would include further performance metrics and budgetary implications.
