District administrators gave a comprehensive human-resources and programmatic update that covered hiring numbers, staff onboarding and a new leadership team at Swanton focused on continuous improvement.
The HR/operations administrator said the district hired 31 professional staff members across schools this season and described open positions, including several hard-to-fill roles such as speech-language pathologists and special-education teachers. "So it's 31 professional staff total that we hired," the administrator said, and provided breakdowns by school, roles and recruitment sources including 6 relocations from out of state.
Administrators also described onboarding and retention efforts: group onboarding sessions, building-based orientation, a teacher orientation day that includes district presentations and a community bus tour, and small welcome gifts to improve retention. The presentation emphasized mentorship and teacher-mentoring programs as part of retention strategy.
Separately, a school leader laid out the new Swanton Continuous Improvement Leadership Team: membership includes classroom teachers, coaches, a librarian, clinicians and administrators and will meet twice monthly at 07:30 to drive data-informed decisions in three pillars (academic achievement; safe and healthy schools; attendance, engagement and truancy) using EduCLIMBER as the district’s data clearinghouse.
Why it matters: the staffing report signals both progress in filling many vacancies and continuing challenges for specialized roles. The continuous-improvement effort aims to keep a data-driven focus on student achievement and well-being at the school level.
What’s next: administrators said they will continue to report hiring metrics monthly and provide updates to the board as the leadership team’s work progresses.
