Student board representative Indiana Hillmas reflects on service, plans to study in Canada

Indiana Hillmas, the district’s retiring student representative, delivered her final presentation to the Selah School District Board of Directors, recounting 13 years in the district, leadership experiences and a message of gratitude.
Hillmas said her time as student representative taught her that “my voice was always valued,” and recounted projects including an interview-based student research presentation and a Selah High School student panel she helped facilitate. She described leadership beginnings as a middle-school student-body president, shared an internship and communications work with the Washington State Board of Education, and said the experience of serving on the local school board helped her link classroom perspective to state-level policy.
Board members responded with praise. One member said Hillmas’ presentation and work ‘‘put in perspective why we’re doing what we’re doing,’’ and another noted personal memories of Hillmas from kindergarten and fifth-grade field trips. The board applauded and asked Hillmas to keep in touch; she said she will do so and confirmed plans to move to Vancouver, British Columbia, to study in the University of British Columbia’s bachelor of international economics program.
The board recognized Hillmas’ contribution to student voice and district engagement and invited her to return and update the board on her studies in the future.
