Board OKs plan to redirect 'All In Tutoring' funds and partner with YMCA for after-school tutoring

The Matthews County School Board voted 5-0 on Aug. 20 to adopt a resolution to reappropriate unexpended "All In Tutoring" funds so the division can expand tutoring and after-school services in partnership with the YMCA.
Superintendent David Daniel said the division still has about $240,000 remaining from Virginia's All In Tutoring program because the state extended spending windows; the plan is to use the funding to compensate teachers for tutoring and to have the YMCA provide supervised after-school care on campus so students eligible for tutoring can remain at school longer. Daniel said the YMCA program is expected to begin on campus around Sept. 23.
Daniel told the board the tutoring program will be scripted and state-approved, not an unsupervised homework session, and that the division will identify students who qualify for targeted interventions. He also noted the Boys & Girls Club arrangement is sunsetting and that the YMCA would provide the site-based after-school services.
Board members asked about timelines and program monitoring; Daniel said updates on tutoring enrollment and student progress would be provided once the program is operating. The motion to adopt the resolution passed unanimously.
