Parents urge classroom cameras for special‑needs students; homeschooler asks for UIL access

Several public commenters used the board’s public‑comment period to press for changes.

Jennifer Moore and Britney Trevino, both parents of students with special needs, asked trustees to adopt clearer policies and to install cameras in self‑contained classrooms to help document allegations and protect both students and staff. "Having cameras in the classroom will allow for investigations to be completed quickly to protect victims as well as accused individuals by providing immediate, accurate, and impartial evidence," Jennifer Moore said. She said she submitted a written request to a principal in February and on March 20 and that cameras were not installed.

Britney Trevino described her experience as the parent of a nonverbal autistic child placed in a self‑contained classroom and said she has lost faith in the district’s handling of prior abuse allegations. "Cameras are the least you can do to protect my son's constitutional rights," Trevino said, and she echoed Ms. Moore’s call for an administrative policy to handle allegations.

Cohen Cole, who identified himself as a homeschooled student who will be a 10th grader within district boundaries, asked trustees to allow homeschool students to participate in UIL athletics under provisions like SB 401. "Homeschool students are a part of the community too," he said, asking for equal opportunity to try out for teams.

Board members listened; staff acknowledged the comments and said the handbook and student code of conduct are being updated to reflect new legislation. No formal policy on classroom cameras or a change to district UIL eligibility was adopted during the meeting.
