West Point Public Schools honors students and staff at board meeting

The West Point Public Schools board recognized students and staff at its most recent meeting, honoring several RISE students and naming the district’s staff and teacher of the year.
Katie F. Shaw, the division instructional coach, read the student recognitions and described honorees’ achievements. She named Lily Brisendine as the middle-school student recognized for responsibility and academic growth and Landen Johnson for responding calmly to a classroom medical emergency. For December, she named Brooklyn Connors (eighth grade) and Daniel Garcia (high school) for strong demonstration of the district’s RISE values.
The board also announced Mr. Dwight Friday as West Point Middle and High School’s support staff member of the year. Shaw said Friday serves as the school security officer and is credited with boosting school spirit and consistently supporting students and staff.
Shaw and other board speakers named Ms. Allison Gaff as the elementary-level teacher of the year and praised Shelley Hopkins as the West Point Middle/High School Teacher of the Year. Board members highlighted Hopkins’s co-teaching work in mathematics and her advocacy for students, noting the district will recognize her in front of her class.
Board members used the recognitions to thank staff and volunteers for their pandemic-era service and ongoing support. The chair encouraged honorees and staff to take time over the holidays to rest before the new year.
The board’s recognition items were ceremonial; no policy action was taken on these awards.
