Mineral Point board hears fall assessment data and plans for Act 20 reading supports

District staff and the reading specialist presented fall assessment results and described how the district will use those data to guide instruction under Act 20.

Rachel Schroeder, the district reading specialist, explained that proficiency for the measures presented aligns roughly with the 50th percentile on the AIMSweb/AIMSweb-ORF benchmarks and that AIMSweb represents a single-day measure — "taking a temperature," she said — which administrators pair with diagnostics before assigning personal reading plans.

Staff and curriculum leads described multiple measures (AIMSweb for oral reading fluency, FastBridge, CommonLit and STAR), noted instances where STAR results appeared as outliers, and said FastBridge and CommonLit showed closer alignment. The reading specialist said the district has chosen CIES training for teachers under Act 20, and that additional staff training (including a planned seven-hour session) and PLC time are being used to implement foundational-reading practices.

Why it matters: Act 20 requires districts to identify students who need personal reading plans and to provide evidence-based interventions. District presenters stressed local control in implementation decisions and cautioned that single-day benchmark scores can misrepresent comprehension; multiple diagnostics and teacher observation will inform decisions about summer school or grade advancement.

Next steps: staff will continue data meetings, complete KEYS/CIES training, monitor winter assessments, and prepare parent-facing materials (to be shared at upcoming fall conferences) explaining assessment results and suggested home supports.
