Board members praised contributors to the plan, described the board—s four pillars (staff, student, community and services) and directed administrators to publish the finalized plan on the district website and return with specific district goals tied to the plan.
Administrators then presented first readings of policy updates. One change to attendance policy (5200) would add parental "reasonable judgment" as an allowable excused absence for severe weather when the district does not cancel school; proponents said the language returns discretion to parents in line with safety concerns, while other members cautioned it could increase discretionary absences. The board also discussed proposed updates to medication/health policies (53-30), academic honesty (55-05, including AI considerations) and other NEOLA updates; those items will return for the second reading and requested action at a future meeting.
The board approved the strategic plan on a voice vote and set the policy revisions for further review at the next meeting.
