District outlines schedule and supports for multiple school consolidations

Board members and district staff outlined plans Aug. 12 for consolidating several elementary schools and the supports the district will use to ease transitions for students and staff.
At the working session, a school leadership director said the district will stagger implementation dates: Nicolay–Sullivan and Dans–Martin consolidations are targeted for the 2025–26 school year; Langlade into Doty and the MacArthur closure are slated for 2026–27. Current students and incoming siblings at affected schools will be offered the option to remain with their peer group until they transition to middle school where the district is 'grandfathering' existing students, the director said.
The district described operational details that matter to families and staff: principals from both closing and receiving schools will collaborate on transitions; district transportation protocols will be followed; some program placements may be reviewed with the goal of preserving or relocating instructional programs; and human resources will work with displaced staff about placement for the 2026–27 school year. The board was told the district will continue to prioritize storage and the staged transfer of furniture and instructional resources so classrooms will be ready for day one.
Staff also said the district will offer prorated incentive stipends for current staff at closing schools who remain through June 2026, consistent with a prior approach used in earlier consolidations. The stipend is prorated by FTE at the closing school, the presentation said.
Board members asked practical questions about open enrollment windows and program continuity. For the Langlade consolidation, district leaders said open enrollment into Langlade will be closed beginning the 2025–26 school year and officials will explore whether particular programs can be preserved or moved to other sites. The board heard that decisions about program placements and provider arrangements for before- and after-school care will be finalized in collaboration with principals.
District leaders said they will distribute a memo to staff and parents later this week summarizing the finalized plans and timelines and providing contact points for families. The presentation emphasized weekly site walk-throughs over the summer, cross-department problem solving, and extra staffing and community volunteers planned for the first week of school to support drop-off, pick-up and orientation.
The board did not take a final vote on the consolidations during the session; the presentation was an implementation update and the district said it will keep the board apprised as plans are finalized.
