Board deadlocks on superintendent’s compensation recommendation; motion fails after three abstentions

The superintendent asked the board to approve a compensation package that would give 3% increases to licensed/professional staff and 4% to support staff and to begin a back‑pay process under the biennial budget. He said the district had recently corrected a compensation error that cost about $160,000 and that staff recruitment and livable wages motivated the proposal.
After discussion about conflicts of interest and which members should abstain, a board member moved to approve the recommendation and another seconded the motion. The clerk reported the final count as three votes in favor and three abstentions; with that tie the motion failed and the proposed increases and back pay did not pass. The superintendent said staff would need direction on next steps and that administration could revisit compensation with additional information or revised terms.
Board discussion raised two principal concerns: procedural safeguards related to family/spouse relationships to employees and the need for more comparative salary data for support positions. Some board members suggested excluding affected spouses from voting or refining the proposal and returning it for a future decision.
Because the motion did not pass, no compensation increases were adopted at this meeting. Administration said it will continue analysis and return with details and possible options for the next meeting.
