River Valley board approves multiple policy updates; civics course added to graduation requirements for class of 2027

The River Valley School District board accepted several policy committee recommendations and advanced additional policy updates, including a change to graduation requirements to add a civics class beginning with the class of 2027.

At second reading the board approved updates to policies covering interscholastic athletics (policy 3.75), the activities program (3.70), student organizations (3.71), and student social events (3.72). The board also reviewed planned responses for emergencies (07/2006) and removed wording that appeared in a parent letter but was inappropriate for policy language.

On first reading the board reviewed policies on open enrollment, student immunizations, and online learning (retitled to reflect use of the rural virtual academy). The board discussed and agreed that a civics course will be required for graduation beginning with the class of 2027; the change will add a 0.5 credit and policies are being updated to reflect the credit adjustment and cross-references to Wisconsin statutes.

A motion to approve the listed policies for the required readings was made and carried. Board members said the administration will research evaluation processes and cross-reference Wisconsin statutes where needed. The board did not adopt changes to evaluation policy at this meeting but requested additional research and return of that topic at a future meeting.
