After discussion about wording, scope and whether the first goal might conflict with free speech on social media, the board approved the goals by a recorded voice vote (motion passed 6–1). One board member registered opposition during the vote.
Board members and several candidates who interviewed earlier referenced the same themes in questioning and remarks at the meeting: improving internal communication among board members, offering targeted board development, and weighing fiscal options before seeking tax increases. The meeting record shows a budget shortfall was referenced during candidate questioning (the figure mentioned was approximately $140,000), and several candidates said tax increases should be a last resort.
The board directed staff to incorporate these goals in future planning and to provide data and reporting that align with the second goal. The motion carried with six votes in favor and one opposed.
