The Rockwood R-VI Board of Education recognized dozens of students from across the district for academic, musical and career-technical achievements and accepted public gifts totaling $58,995 during its awards ceremony.
The board approved routine business before the program, including removing agenda item 6.08 and approving minutes and the consent agenda. A board member read aloud and thanked donors to the district: Ridge Meadows PTO donated $17,995 for a new school marquee; Wildhorse PTO gave $26,000 for a cafeteria sound system; an anonymous donor at Babler contributed $1,000 for school lunches; Early Childhood PTO donated $1,000 for teacher appreciation; and Lafayette PTO provided $13,000 to buy two outdoor AED cabinets. "And just a thank you to all of the people that have donated to, support our students and our schools," the board member said.
The awards program that followed highlighted individual and group accomplishments at schools across Rockwood. Dr. Brent Pearson, assistant principal at Selvidge Middle School, described an Above and Beyond award recognizing band teacher Caitlin Gere and librarian James Miller. He said the two collaborated to design and 3D-print an adaptive device that enabled a student missing a pinky finger to play the clarinet, and asked the audience to join in recognizing their work.
Principals from several schools presented student winners from statewide competitions. Dr. Corey Sink of Eureka High School named HOSA winners and musical ensembles that earned superior ratings. Dr. Karen Calcutera of Lafayette High School announced first-place Future Business Leaders of America winners and Lafayette students who qualified for robotics and other contests; presenters noted Lafayette’s robotics team is the only team in Missouri to qualify for a particular international invitational. Dr. Tracy Wackerley of Marquette High School listed Marquette students who earned Missouri Scholars and other awards, and she highlighted journalism and music honors. Dr. Emily McCown of Rockwood Summit recognized students who achieved all-Missouri and state-level music distinctions.
The ceremony concluded with the emcee presenting the Saint Louis Association of Secondary School Principals' 2024–2025 High School Assistant Principal of the Year award to Sarah Govan, and attendees were invited to a post-ceremony reception. The presiding officer then adjourned the meeting.
The board’s announcements and student recognitions were primarily celebratory. No policy decisions or funding allocations beyond accepting the listed gifts were taken during the ceremony.
