City staff announced on Feb. 13 that O'Fallon will launch a pilot single‑stream curbside recycling program beginning March 4, 2025 for Tuesday pickup routes.
Staff said the pilot returns paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel cans, plastic and glass to regular curbside collection in one cart so residents will no longer need to drive materials to drop‑off locations. New carts and informational packets will be delivered to participating households; city staff said the program will be rolled out to additional neighborhoods as the pilot proves budget‑feasible and operations run smoothly.
Presenters emphasized contamination controls: recyclables should be rinsed and allowed to dry and residents should not place prohibited items (plastic bags, hoses, coat hangers, hangers) in the cart because contamination can cause entire loads to be rejected. Staff said the pilot will be provided without a rate increase and that a labeled lid and printed materials will help residents understand acceptable materials.
The rollout timing is staged by route; staff asked residents in pilot neighborhoods to follow instructions and said the city will expand the program if participation and contamination rates meet budget expectations.
