Rockwood postpones approval of multiple revised curricula to Feb. 5 after first readings

The Rockwood Board of Education heard a series of first readings on proposed curriculum updates spanning high school science electives, world languages, career and technical education (CTE), high-school math and computer science, strings and orchestra, physical education and health, and library media. After presentations by coordinators, the board voted to postpone approval of each package until the district's Feb. 5 board meeting.
Highlights from the presentations included:
- Science electives: new semester offerings (astronomy, meteorology, geology, sports science) developed after a 2022 program evaluation with 4,783 survey responses; goal to increase semester-course options and project-based learning.
- World languages: curriculum aligned to ACTFL proficiency scales with consistent course outcomes across Spanish, French and German; attention to increased speaking opportunities and common assessments.
- CTE: new pathways, capstones and internships plus new courses (advanced metals processing, marketing, social media management, AP Business & Personal Finance) designed to create career-aligned pathways.
- Math and computer science: updates to geometry and honors geometry with clarified rigor, a new semester statistics offering, and a foundations of game design course incorporating C#; Python and Java remain in other CS offerings.
- Strings & orchestra and library media: program reviews emphasized access, calibrated assessment (recordings and common scoring), equity in instrument access and media-literacy alignment to Missouri and national standards.
- PE/Health: separate program reviews for PE and health to allow more agile legislative response, a move to skills-based health aligned with national standards, merged aquatics courses with lifeguard certification options and a revamped high-school PE "carousel" to help students sample offerings.
Board action: For each curriculum area the board approved a motion to postpone final action until Feb. 5, 2026, allowing more time for review and potential refinement. Coordinators said they will continue professional learning and work with teachers on implementation plans ahead of the next meeting.
What’s next: All curriculum approvals were postponed to Feb. 5; coordinators and departments will continue community input, staffing analysis and implementation planning before final board action.
