Hardy County students showcase robotics awards, expand K–12 outreach and seek volunteers for Jan. 25 qualifier

Students from the district’s robotics team briefed the board on recent achievements and outreach efforts and asked the community for volunteers to host a regional qualifier event.
Presenters said the program grew from a single team in 2018 to several teams across grade levels; they described last season’s awards, including the Inspire award and the Connect award, and noted an individual student was an international finalist for a Dean’s List honor. A student presenter said robotics helps develop communication, teamwork and problem solving from elementary school through high school.
The group announced that multiple district teams will compete in the West Virginia FLL state competition on Dec. 7, and the high-school team will attend qualifiers on Dec. 15 and Jan. 18. Northwell High School will host a First Chesapeake FTC qualifier on Jan. 25, 2025; presenters asked for roughly 80 volunteers, many of whom do not require technical experience but must complete youth protection screening through FIRST.
A student presenter said outreach into elementary classrooms has produced measurable improvements in teamwork and communication, and the team encouraged the board and residents to take flyers and follow the team on social media for event updates.
