District warned of potential $3.5 million chargeback from Froedtert tax settlement

Finance staff described a joint city‑Froedtert press release and explained the settlement reduces Froedtert’s assessed taxable portion for 2021–24 by roughly $10 million. Under normal chargeback procedures, taxing entities — including the school district, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the county — would bear their proportionate shares of the reduction. The city has told district staff that it will work with taxing bodies on timing and potential financing to spread the impact on taxpayers.
The board was briefed for awareness; no action was required Monday. Finance staff said one option for the district would be to use fund balance to cover the full amount, but they recommended charging it back to taxpayers and exploring city‑supported financing to smooth the impact. The timing, final amount and any interest costs remain under discussion; staff said the city had not set a hard decision deadline but the board should expect follow‑up through the finance committee.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about options, whether the district had any role in the city’s negotiations, and potential budgeting implications. Staff emphasized this was not district mismanagement but the outcome of a separate assessment and appeal process between the city and Froedtert.
