Mocksville board adopts resolution to support CDBG application for SBA Home expansion

The Mocksville Board voted to adopt a resolution backing a Community Development Block Grant application to assist SBA Home (previously called Project Root) as the company plans U.S. operations.
At a required public hearing, Michael Walzer described the project and why the hearing is necessary. "This public hearing is required in order for the town to submit the final application pending that approval by that Rural, Infrastructure Authority board," he said, explaining the Department of Commerce has proposed a $750,000 grant to the town to help pay building retrofits. Walzer said the company plans to locate in a 500,000-square-foot facility at 134 Geldown Drive, expects to invest approximately $50,800,000 over four to five years and to hire about 250 employees.
Walzer reminded the board that the funding comes with federal requirements. "Because these are federal funds, these funds come from HUD. There are a number of federal requirements that go with that," he said, and presented the set of policies and documents the town must adopt to submit the application.
After the presentation the board moved and seconded the resolution and related federal package and approved them by voice vote. The mayor said the formal local resolution and the public hearing record are required for the state to forward the package to the Rural Infrastructure Authority, which has final approval scheduled for its meeting on February 20.
No formal opposing public comments were recorded during the hearing. The town staff will finalize the application and submit it to the state as the Rural Infrastructure Authority considers the request.
