Foundation for Better Schools pledges band grants and backpacks; board fills advisory seats

Mister Nestor, representing the Foundation for Better Schools, updated the Upshur County Schools board on recent grants and activities, saying the foundation approved a $1,675 grant for band equipment, agreed to contribute $2,500 as a matching grant toward about $5,000 in instrument replacements, and retains roughly $21,000 set aside for weekly backpacks.
"We agreed to contribute $2,500 as a matching brand," Mister Nestor said, describing the foundation's support for the band boosters and other student-focused efforts. He also noted the foundation will co-sponsor some home-game fundraisers while the boosters seek 501(c)(3) recognition.
The foundation reported plans to meet monthly (first Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Rock Cave library) to coordinate efforts and to discuss summer feeding and other student supports. Mister Nestor said the foundation approved a therapy dog for the middle school and is exploring food-handler-card training to help concession volunteers meet new requirements.
On board business, members moved and approved appointments of Miss Craig to the Parks and Recreation advisory board, the 4-H foundation board, and the extension services board. Motions to appoint her were seconded and carried by voice vote.
Board members thanked the foundation for the work and the Superintendent said the district will continue to coordinate with the foundation and accommodate requests for presentations and collaboration.
The board concluded routine business and set upcoming meeting dates; no controversial policy decisions were taken on the foundation's recommendations during the meeting.
