Tree Commission highlights 98-tree North Side planting, targeted giveaways and outreach plans

Isabelle, who provided the planting update, said the commission and partners planted 98 trees in the North Side on Jan. 10 and completed structural pruning and mulching where possible. "We planted 98 trees in the North Side, on the tenth," she said, describing strong volunteer participation, coordination with Bartlett Tree Experts for post-planting care, and a decision to plant predominantly at sites (schools and institutions) that can sustain tree care.
Isabelle said two giveaways remain this season and described a targeted approach for one event scheduled Feb. 14 at DC Virgo to serve North Side residents; commissioners discussed door-knock outreach to about 500 homes in the target area so those residents receive priority access. The commission also reported outreach at TreeFest — brochures and guides were well received — and discussed creating more visible identification for commission volunteers at future events (badges or shirts).
Members noted staffing and capacity improvements: a staff coordinator was recently moved to nearly full time after a strong fundraising season and an intern has joined to support outreach and school coordination. The group plans additional partnerships with UNCW, Master Gardeners and school programs for future plantings.
No formal votes or budget actions were taken; commissioners agreed to review current developer guidance and species lists that staff will circulate ahead of the next meeting.
