School staff outlined steps to support students with significant behavioral needs and said they are taking early outreach steps to build relationships with families.

They advised keeping data on students’ academic and behavioral needs and said, “Our state policies require us to provide intervention not only to academic referrals, but also to behavior referrals,” explaining that progress monitoring helps determine eligibility for special education services.

A teacher described classroom challenges and early outreach efforts: “I see kids coming to my classroom and the classroom of my colleagues who just aren't ready to learn yet. Their behaviors make it almost impossible for them to learn and often impedes the learning of their classmates.” The teacher said the district has moved kindergarten registration into the community to begin relationship-building with families before school starts and added that student support teams are creating crisis plans so staff know how to react when behaviors arise.
