The Saint Bernard Community Improvement Corporation voted to authorize up to $3,000 to clear brush and debris at a vacant hillside property at 31 Phillips, the board said at its May 27 meeting.
President (chair) opened discussion, saying the overgrown lot is impeding a neighboring homeowner’s enjoyment of a patio and pool. Meredith Hughes, who participated in the discussion, said hiring a contractor or using the village service department could handle cleanup, and estimated cleanup costs would likely be cheaper than repairing potential damage. “Short of 3,000, $4,000, it’s gonna be cheaper to get it cleaned up,” Hughes said.
Secretary (who moved the motion) formally moved to authorize spending not more than $3,000 to maintain the property; the motion was seconded by Joe Brickler. The board recorded a unanimous vote among members present and declared the motion passed; two members were recorded absent. The board did not specify a contractor in the meeting and directed staff to obtain estimates.
The authorization is limited to the stated cap; any amount above that would require further board approval. The president noted the CIC could reimburse the village if the village service department performs the work, or hire a private contractor if necessary. The board also discussed potential code-enforcement risks if the lot remains overgrown.
The board will record the expenditure under CIC maintenance and proceed to gather bids and scheduling information for the cleanup.
