Manatee schools report 1,007-student enrollment gain; new elementary designs and school-naming process under way

Superintendent Wysong told the board that after the first 10 days of the 2024 school year district enrollment stood at 52,480 students, an increase of 1,007 from the same point last year.
"After day 8 this year, we were at 52,480 students," the superintendent said, summarizing a gain concentrated mostly in district-operated elementary schools. The district said 60% of the growth is in district-operated schools and the remainder in charter schools; staff also said it has made allocations to meet constitutional class-size obligations and that it did not have to initiate involuntary teacher displacement.
Operations director Mister Rinaldi provided construction and operations updates: the board approved negotiations with architects for two prototype elementary schools (Artisan Lakes and Rye Ranch), described as roughly 120,000 square feet and sized for about 960 students, and approved design work on an eight-classroom addition to Williams Elementary. Rinaldi said the prototype design was previously used in other counties and that staff are moving quickly on procurement for construction managers.
On school naming, staff said the naming process for the East K-8 campus will open on the district website at noon tomorrow, remain open for 30 days and close Sept. 27 at noon; the board could take action as early as Oct. 8 or finalize a decision Oct. 22 so signage and letterhead can be ordered ahead of the campus opening.
Next steps: staff will continue procurement steps on design and construction; the naming nomination page will be published and the board will consider name options at upcoming meetings.
