Manatee board outlines timeline to adopt state-required personal financial literacy materials

Tiffany Spradling, the district irector of secondary curriculum, told the Manatee County School Board the district is launching the instructional-materials adoption process for the state-required half-credit course in personal financial literacy and money management.
"Pursuant to Florida statute 1003.41 and 1003.4282, all students entering ninth grade beginning with last school year must earn one half credit in personal financial literacy and money management," Spradling said, describing topics the statute requires and the committee-based review process the district will use.
Spradling walked the board through the timeline and public-participation steps: applications to join the Instructional Materials Adoption Committee will be available on the district website from Aug. 28 through Sept. 4, committee members will be notified about selections by Sept. 6, and a virtual training session is scheduled for Sept. 10. Publishers invited to participate will present to the committee on Sept. 18; finalists will be narrowed and ranked at a final committee meeting on Oct. 4, with staff bringing recommendations to the board at the Oct. 22 meeting for possible approval.
Spradling said district staff will pre-screen materials and that publishers on the state doption list have been invited to participate. Digital and print materials will be available for public review beginning Sept. 12 on the district—urriculum textbook adoption webpage; the district will also provide printed copies at the Professional Support Center.
The board and speakers emphasized community involvement. "We really want this committee experience to involve the community," Spradling said, and board members urged teacher and program integration such as Big Bank activities to align with the new course.
Next steps: the district will accept committee applications through Sept. 4; the district expects to present a recommended instructional-materials adoption to the board on Oct. 22 if the process proceeds as outlined.
