Committee hears update on Marengo road-maintenance talks; county board approval needed for grant submission

County highway staff updated the Ashland County Highway Committee on ongoing discussions with the Town of Marengo about a road maintenance agreement. The Commissioner said the town is holding a public hearing and, if approved locally, the agreement will require county-board approval at the March meeting so the town can submit a linked grant application due in March.
Staff told the committee they are still gathering detailed financial numbers for grant reporting and expected to provide improved figures shortly. The Commissioner said, if the contract proceeds, an effective date of Nov. 1 is anticipated for the maintenance agreement.
Committee members asked procedural questions about how town votes and the grant timeline would affect taxpayers; staff explained that each town would vote and that the town-level taxpayers would bear any per-town share proportionally. The Commissioner said two towns (Chippewa and the Village of Butternut) have already approved the bridge-aid proposal and that staff will seek 'yay' or 'nay' responses from the remaining towns before presenting town standings to the highway committee in May and the county board in June.
Next steps: staff will continue to refine grant reporting numbers, attend the Town of Marengo public hearing, and, if the town approves, submit the agreement and grant materials to the county board for action.
