The Mocksville Town Board adopted an amendment to its code to prohibit a permit exception that had allowed builders to burn construction or yard-clearing waste within the town's corporate limits.
Town staff reported the change was drafted after receiving multiple citizen complaints about burning associated with land clearing. The amendment removes the exception that previously allowed a builder to obtain a permit to burn construction waste or yard waste resulting from clearing property. Manager Ken said the change mirrors practices in more developed municipalities and cited air-quality concerns as part of the rationale.
"After getting feedback from the board, I have drafted changes to the ordinance and Al has approved those changes which would remove that exception," Ken said. Board members noted such bans are not uncommon and emphasized protecting air quality and residents' complaints.
Board action: After brief discussion there was a motion and second; the amendment passed by voice vote.
What's next: Staff will publish the ordinance change to the town code and inform building permit applicants of the new restriction.
