Summary
The Sunnyside Unified School District governing board unanimously approved the district's FY 2024-25 Annual Financial Report, which shows a total approved budget of $259,488,868, revenues of about $201,000,007 and an ending fund balance of roughly $101,000,004; the board was told it will receive a bond and override spending update at the next meeting.
The Sunnyside Unified School District governing board unanimously approved the district's fiscal year 2024'25 Annual Financial Report on a roll-call vote after a presentation from district finance staff.
Carla Walters, introduced to the board before the presentation, summarized the report and the submission requirements. "The business and finance team has worked very hard and collaborated and completed this report every year," Walters said, explaining that the report uses general ledger accounting data for the period ending June 30, 2025, and must be uploaded to the Arizona Auditor General's office and the Arizona Department of Education by Oct. 15 in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes.
Walters presented the report's headline figures: the approved budget across all fund classifications totals $259,488,868; expenditures and transfers out for all funds combined were reported as nearly $176,000,000; revenues were listed at about $201,000,007.43; and the total ending fund balance was reported as approximately $101,000,004.55. She noted that beginning fund balances and reimbursements for federal and state grants affect cash timing and that most fund ending balances exceed budgeted balances. Walters also said the maintenance and operations (M&O) budget and the unrestricted capital budget now include voter-approved overrides, and that the board will receive its first reported override spending for fiscal year 2025 and a bond/override update at the next meeting.
Board members thanked Walters and the business office for preparing the report. After brief comments of appreciation, a board member moved to approve the fiscal year 2024'25 Annual Financial Report and supplemental reports "as presented," and another board member seconded. The board then took a roll-call vote and recorded unanimous approval.
What the vote covered and what happens next: the approval formally accepts the AFR for submission to state oversight bodies and begins the district's public reporting of override spending tied to voter-approved overrides. Walters noted the AFR is subject to independent audit; the district will upload its general ledger data to the Arizona Auditor General's office and publish the AFR on the Arizona Department of Education website when available.
The board also flagged revised bylaws for a future meeting and adjourned without further substantive business.
