The Tucson Unified School District governing board on Feb. 10 appointed Whitmore Elementary Principal Jennifer Figueroa as the district’s director of exceptional education.
Superintendent Dr. Trujillo presented the hiring recommendation, describing Figueroa as a leader suited to serve the district’s large population of students with disabilities and to improve communication with families. Trujillo said the director position had been filled on an interim basis and that the board’s appointment would enable a transition at the end of the school year.
Board members asked Figueroa to speak about her vision and accountability approach. Figueroa emphasized communication and responsiveness to parents and staff, saying she is "in classrooms" and that she prioritizes returning calls and being present for families and staff.
The board voted to approve the appointment on a 5–0 roll call. Board members praised Figueroa’s experience leading Whitmore and said they expected her to work closely with program coordinators and the superintendent’s team to support vulnerable learners.
The appointment is effective per district procedures; the board did not discuss specific contract terms at the Feb. 10 meeting.
