Governance committee approves multiple housekeeping policy updates; most pass unanimously

Key approvals included: a delegation allowing the director of schools or designee to approve routine charter-school curriculum waivers; an update to class-size ratios to extend waiver parity for technical courses in grades 6–12; a clarification that homeschool students are eligible for interscholastic athletics under zoned-school rules; a small update to instructional-materials review timelines to reflect 2024 public acts; an internet-use policy addition tying AI internet use to the newly adopted AI guiding principles; a grading-system change to reflect a State Board increase of extra points for dual-enrollment courses from 4% to 5%; a promotion-and-retention update that adds a voluntary-retention path for K–2 parents meeting documentation criteria; and a clarification that non-school employment restrictions apply to all personnel.
The committee also approved a school-visitor code of conduct that staff will post in schools. Most of these moves were described as housekeeping to align district policy with state law; in general the motions passed without roll-call tallies recorded in the transcript and were announced as unanimous.
The only policy the committee deferred was Policy 6.318 (admission of suspended or expelled students) after members raised concerns about operationalization and statutory references. Staff and legal will prepare clarifying procedures for an August governance meeting.
The committee closed by scheduling the governance meeting in August to revisit several items and by considering an executive session with attorneys for further legal briefing.
