The Dorchester District 2 Board on July 22 approved a superintendent recommendation to proceed with awarding procurement for a new video scoreboard at Fort Dorchester High School and received a comprehensive facilities update.
Superintendent Dr. Robbins described the current Fort Dorchester scoreboard as beyond repair and said the district used a competitive RFP process and an evaluation committee to select the low, responsive bid to recommend for award. Procurement staff clarified the district issued a multi-award, five-year procurement for video-board services; three vendors were prequalified. Because the protest period and final award process remain open, the district did not announce the winning vendor or disclose the award amount at the meeting.
The board approved the recommendation following a motion by Miss Powell, seconded by Miss Hughes; the manual vote was 5 in favor, 2 absent.
Facilities director Mr. Farrell outlined summer projects: abatement and remodeling across four campuses (Austin, SPAN, Somerville and Knightsville), a new media center and front-office work at Fort Dorchester High School, repainting projects across schools, new AC units at SPAN, and staged trailers and interior renovations at Knightsville. He said the Sand Hill temporary learning buildings arrived earlier than expected; ramp installation, concrete work and OSF inspection were in the days ahead and the district is preparing plan B trailer placements if necessary.
Dr. Robbins said the projects described to trustees are funded with existing TIF and 8% funds and clarified the district has not yet begun using referendum funds for construction. The district has issued RFPs for construction services, construction management (multi-award), and a multi-award RFP for wing additions and gym projects; officials said ground-breaking steps will accelerate once permits and shovel-ready approvals are in place.
Trustees asked about sponsor signage and upkeep for the video board; staff said the planned unit is an electronic video board similar to one installed at Ashley Ridge High School and sponsor content will be displayed electronically rather than with separate graphic signage.
