Dorchester District 2 approves weekly 30-minute elementary early release for teacher PLCs, extends school day by 10 minutes

The Dorchester District 2 Board of Trustees on July 22 approved a schedule change that shortens elementary school Wednesdays by 30 minutes to give teachers regular professional learning-community (PLC) time and adds 10 minutes to the school day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Superintendent Dr. Robbins told trustees the district will release elementary buses about 30 minutes earlier on Wednesdays so teachers can use that time for data teams, faculty meetings or other professional development. To maintain instructional time overall, the district will lengthen each regular school day by 10 minutes. Dr. Robbins said transportation staff and principals were part of planning and that route analysis indicates buses can accommodate the change without disrupting middle and high school schedules.

Trustees pressed officials on childcare and supervision. The district said LEAP aftercare will be expanded to cover families who need the 30-minute window at no charge and that principals and afterschool staff will use larger indoor spaces (media centers, cafeterias) to supervise students during the transition. Dr. Robbins said the expanded LEAP and alternate supervision will be provided without additional charge.

Trustee Miss Hughes moved to approve the schedule change; Mr. Farnsworth seconded. The manual vote was 5 in favor, 2 absent.

Board members emphasized communication plans for families, with repeated suggestions for text reminders and outreach in the first quarter after implementation. The superintendent said the district’s public information office would issue a three-bullet notice after the meeting and a fuller press release to families if the board approved the change.

The board approved the change as presented; trustees said they expect frequent reminders and close coordination with LEAP and principals during the initial rollout.
