Clarkdale commission agrees to update bandstand sign to note recent refurbishments and award

The Town of Clarkdale Historic Preservation Commission on Feb. 3 agreed to pursue updated wording for the bandstand (also called the gazebo) plaque that would add a short paragraph noting a recent refurbishment and the town’s governor’s heritage preservation award.
Scott, a staff member, told commissioners they were “thinking is, it does have information regarding the refurbishment in 2004, and we'd like to, potentially update that” by adding a paragraph about the newest work while keeping the existing text. The commission asked staff to produce draft language using the award nomination wording for review.
The revision matters, members said, because the project earned formal recognition. A committee member said the town “won the governor's heritage preservation award for this project” and described how an earlier proposal to demolish the structure prompted a grassroots effort that led to its refurbishment and retention on the National Register of Historic Places. Commissioners agreed not to include detailed descriptions of the controversy on the plaque but to note the collaborative preservation outcome.
Staff and commissioners discussed signage logistics: they intend to keep the sign’s current size and mounting and to fit new text by adjusting type size if needed. Scott said he would circulate the nomination language and a proposed final design to the commission; after members approve wording, the commission will recommend the sign to the town council for final approval.
The commission also noted it will coordinate with the museum archives to verify historical photographs and placement before finalizing any language. Scott said he will gather nomination language and archival materials and distribute them to commissioners for comment.
In brief business items, a committee member moved to approve the Jan. 6 minutes; the motion passed by voice vote. The commission later approved a motion to adjourn.
