Planning commission sets public hearing on rezoning request, delays decision on meeting-time change

The Porterville Town Planning and Zoning Commission voted Feb. 25 to set a public hearing next month on a rezoning request filed by Terry Griffiths for three parcels and postponed a decision on changing the commission’s regular meeting day.

Griffiths told the commission he wants the properties rezoned to commercial to simplify inheritance and possible future transfers; he said he does not plan immediate commercial development. Commissioners examined parcel sizes and existing houses and noted some lots are near the 10,000-square-foot range while the commission referenced larger minimums under certain residential classifications. The commission agreed to set a public hearing to solicit community comment and to then send a recommendation to the town council.

Separately, commissioners discussed proposals to move the planning commission meeting from Wednesdays to Mondays to align with a town council scheduling change and to start at 5:30 p.m. Supporters said a Monday evening start would make meetings more accessible to members of the public and those off work; others urged waiting until the town council finalizes its schedule. The commission tabled any change until the council acts.

During other business the commission confirmed a previously recorded appointment of Chelsea to the secretary position from the town office and discussed routine administrative duties. The meeting ended with a motion to adjourn and a welcome to a new attendee, Riley.

Next steps: the commission will hold a public hearing on the rezoning request next month and will revisit meeting-day changes after the town council announces its schedule.
