Board approves earlier meeting start time after debate; implementation set for Feb. 1, 2025

After extended debate about public access and constituent sign‑up, the Greenville County Schools board voted to revise its board‑meeting start time policy (BCBA) to a 6:00 p.m. start and set the change to take effect Feb. 1, 2025.

Administration presented the proposal as a way to make meetings more convenient for trustees, employees and the public, noting meetings have historically begun at 7 p.m. and that an earlier start could make it more likely people stay for the whole meeting. "06:00 is a time that I feel works well for everyone," the board chair said during the presentation.

Concerns raised: several trustees objected that a 6 p.m. start could make it harder for working constituents and parents to arrive in time to register for public comment. Trustees asked whether an online portal for day‑of registration could address access issues. Administration said a portal option exists (a new product from the vendor previously used during the pandemic) and offered to bring a recommended sign‑up process back to the board at the January meeting.

Procedure and votes: a motion to table the change to allow more constituent outreach failed on roll call. Trustees then considered two implementation dates presented by administration (January or July); the board initially convened on a July 1 option but a trustee moved to amend the motion to set implementation on February 1, 2025 and to direct administration to return in January with proposed portal and policy language for sign‑up. The amended motion passed.

What it means: administration will draft and present the specific portal and registration language for the January meeting and work to ensure public‑comment access is preserved when the new start time takes effect. Trustees noted that if community feedback requires it, the board can revisit or modify BCBA before the new effective date.
