Board approves small unmanned aircraft policy, asks administration to draft application guidelines

The Wauwatosa School District board voted on Sept. 22 to adopt Policy 7440.03 governing small unmanned aircraft systems after a community member asked the board to clarify how providers obtain authorization.
Rebecca (board member) raised concerns that the policy did not describe the steps needed to request permission. Jamie Price, Director of Technology, told the board that the policy intentionally requires compliance with applicable WIAA rules, FAA regulations and any local requirements but that the procedural steps and application process should be captured in an administrative guideline rather than the policy itself. Price said staff would draft the guideline and make it available to community members who request to provide drone‑based services.
Board members discussed the policy’s language around superintendent authorization and agreed that the administrative guideline could provide the operational detail — for example, which administrator or office tenants or service providers should contact to begin the authorization process. The board moved to approve Policy 7440.03 after that clarification and the motion carried by roll call.
The board did not vote to adopt a final administrative guideline that night; Mr. Price was asked to draft the guideline and to coordinate with the policy committee and administration so that the community knows how to request permission in practice.
