Board members told the Hastings-on-Hudson Board of Education on Aug. 27 that a recent facilities walkthrough uncovered a hazardous condition above classroom drop ceilings and that the district moved quickly to address it.
Miss Caraballo reported that engineers found concrete separated from structure — described in the meeting as roughly 12,000 pounds in affected classroom areas — and the district executed emergency contracts to remove the material. The superintendent said environmental testing, including asbestos checks, was completed as part of the remediation and that no one was harmed.
Separately, the board discussed the district's building condition survey and pre-bond work. The district awarded a contract via RFP to Land Associates to produce a thorough building condition report and a schedule to support a potential bond referendum roughly a year away. "LAN has already proven, remarkably thorough," the superintendent said, and the firm is preparing scope and cost information the district will use to plan community outreach and the bond timeline.
Board members emphasized the value of the recent walkthrough, saying it highlighted overcrowded spaces and the need for careful, phased investment in older buildings. The board said it will schedule facilities meetings in the coming weeks to review the survey results and refine timing and scope for potential capital work.
