Committee adopts communications plan and approves new student representative

On Monday the Sanford School Committee unanimously approved two notable items: formal adoption of a district communications plan and the appointment of Alessandra Castro as student representative.

Superintendent Mister Nelson presented the communications plan as a framework for regular internal and external messaging, saying the district aims to "provide regular information on districtwide issues" and to "tell our story" through a mix of newsletters, a Sanford Spotlight, and expanded digital distribution. The plan also calls for monthly themes, improved signage, use of the district website and apps, and a stronger push to solicit community announcements so local nonprofits and youth programs can more reliably reach families.

"When we're looking at telling our story, we're looking at both internal and external audiences," Nelson said during the presentation. After discussion and feedback from committee members about community announcements and print reminders for families, a motion to adopt the communications plan was moved and seconded and passed on a voice vote.

Earlier in the meeting the committee moved new business K1 forward to consider appointment of a student representative. Nelson described a selection process: four applications were received, interviews were held, and the superintendent recommended Alessandra Castro as the student representative for the class of 2027. A committee member moved to approve the recommendation; the motion passed on a voice vote and Alessandra Castro joined the committee at the table to be introduced.
