The West Hempstead board reviewed and reaffirmed several district policies and agreed to forward them to the regular meeting on Aug. 5.
Chair (S2) reported policy 3443 (investments), policy 4100 (ethical conduct), policy 5151 (student wellness), and other administrative regulations had been reviewed by counsel and found legally sufficient. The board moved the full packet of policies to the regular meeting by voice vote.
Committee members questioned policy 5120 (attendance) to confirm whether it applied to post-9th-period classes and Regents review sessions. Staff clarified that the attendance policy governs regular district attendance and that building-level procedures handle course-specific requirements and consequences. "This policy is about the attendance within the West Hempstead School District, not whether or not the private school children…are going to school," Chair (S2) said.
On voter registration (policy 5172), staff noted recent statutory changes that require districts to offer registration forms to eligible students. Members discussed eligibility concerns for noncitizen students and whether the district may or may not inquire about citizenship; staff and counsel said state guidance prohibits asking about citizenship status and that students ineligible to register would not complete the form.
At the meeting’s close Chair (S2) moved the policies to the next meeting and asked for a motion to adjourn; the board approved both on voice votes.
