Senior Sofia Ciminera thanks school leaders, says physical education builds 'teamwork'

"Physical education is not just teaching kids how to stay healthy. It's about teaching teamwork," Ciminera said, describing herself as a five-year starter and three-year captain of the girls varsity soccer team and a four-year leader on the girls varsity bowling team. She said athletics taught perseverance and determination "when things get tough."
Ciminera told the meeting the recently approved gymnasium is more than a place to exercise; it is "a symbolism of how much the staff and the community cares about the wants and the needs of the students." She said the facility signals the school’s belief in students and provides opportunities that help build futures.
Speaking on behalf of student athletes at West Hempstead, Ciminera offered gratitude for the board’s support and for the commitment to providing opportunities. "I could not be more proud to be part of a community like this," she said, adding that the lessons learned through sports will "carry with me through the rest of my life."
