Saranac Lake board to form committee to review school-building feasibility study

The Saranac Lake Central School District Board of Education agreed to form a committee to review a newly delivered school-building feasibility study and to plan broader public engagement before pursuing any reorganization.

Board Chair opened the discussion by calling the study a priority and urging action: “It might be the most important thing we do for the next decade of children in our district, staff as well,” the Chair said. Trustees discussed options in the report and whether the consultant has worked with comparable districts.

A board member asked staff to collect examples from other districts and to report on timelines and public engagement practices the consultants used in similar size communities. “Maybe there's some stuff to learn,” a member said, urging the district to seek relevant case studies and process guidance.

Members emphasized committee composition and outreach. The Chair proposed an ad hoc committee including board members, administration and parents, and suggested holding meetings in affected communities (the Chair specifically referenced meeting at Bloomingdale). Administrators said the committee should look beyond the building study to community demographics and funding implications.

Trustees asked staff to gather demographic and birth-rate data and to consider consulting a demographer to evaluate the study's enrollment projections. Board members also flagged the need to track state funding changes — including possible foundation-aid reforms — that could influence any long-term facility plan.

The board set the item for continued review and asked staff to place committee-charter discussion on the next agenda, with a goal of outlining committee membership, public outreach plans and an expected timeline for deliberations.
