Athletic director: participation up; teams practicing emergency drills and getting new gear

Forrest Morgan, the district's athletic director, told the Saranac Lake Central School District board on Dec. 4 that fall-sports participation increased this year, with nearly half of students playing a fall sport and several teams and athletes earning postseason recognition.
Morgan listed highlights: boys cross-country sectional and state qualifiers, volleyball moving from Class C to Class B and reaching the playoffs, and individual honors across soccer, football and other sports. He said the district fielded a JV boys soccer team for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic and noted several uniform and equipment purchases across teams.
Board members asked about safety and emergency procedures. Morgan said each team now uses a custom emergency-action plan the district developed and that drills are practiced preseason and during the season "like a fire drill," with students and coaches assigned clear roles, AED locations identified, and procedures for calling 911 and notifying district staff. He said drills have increased preparedness and that the program continues to evolve each season.
Morgan's report also touched on transportation hours increases tied to doubleheaders for soccer and volleyball and occasional extended driver hours when parents cannot transport students after events.
The board thanked Morgan and had no further action; athletic updates were provided for information.
