Saranac Lake highlights MathCounts success, music and classroom engagement initiatives

Administrators told the Saranac Lake Central School District board on Feb. 12 that students and staff continue to produce competitive and curriculum-focused results across grade levels.
Amy (speaker 8) reported that math teachers Melinda Bard and Tyler Chase restarted the MathCounts team this winter and took 12 middle school students to Clinton Community College on Feb. 1 for the 40th annual MathCounts competition. "In the individual competition, our students took second, third, and fourth places," she said, and added that Saranac Lake placed second in the team competition. Amy said the students will compete at the state competition on March 1 in Saratoga.
Amy also said Mr. Vanier took 22 middle school band students to the Essex County School Music Association all-county event on Jan. 30, an honors festival for students selected based on musical ability. Two teachers, Jackson and Bell, presented a "Words Matter" session to all seventh graders to explore the impact of language and promote inclusivity; eighth graders are scheduled to participate the following day.
Katie (speaker 2) summarized elementary events tied to Winter Carnival, family movie night and an ongoing writing challenge connected to the school's SEL program, the Positivity Project, and reminded the board about upcoming academic progress awards and parent-teacher conferences.
Melissa (speaker 10) said the district's curriculum cycle is concentrating on student engagement: "...what moves the needle from effective to highly effective," she said, adding that the work will continue through the coming year.
Board members thanked staff for the updates. The meeting also included brief community partnership remarks from Suzanne about connecting the school to local organizations and a reminder from Brian about benchmark assessments and an upcoming visit by the Winter Carnival court.
The board did not vote on programmatic changes during the session; the reports were for information and staff planning.
