Committee unanimously approves COT "Intro to Education" vocational program

The school committee voted unanimously to approve the Center of Technology’s new Intro to Education vocational program, CIPS code 13.501, concluding the board-level step before state approval.
Paulette, who presented the program to the committee, said students will spend two days at the Center of Technology for academic instruction and three days in partner schools as interns with mentor teachers. "If students successfully complete it, they would be eligible to get an EdTech I certification through the Department of Education," Paulette said, adding that students also earn CPR and mandated-reporting certifications and may receive dual-enrollment college credit.
John moved to accept the program and Marie seconded. After questions about enrollment and outcomes, the chair asked "All those in favor?" and the committee approved the motion by unanimous voice vote. Paulette told the committee the vote represents the final step at the district level before she seeks final state approval.
The presenter said the program is already running with a small cohort: "I think we have maybe 9 students in it," she said. Committee members praised the program as a way to address long-term teacher shortages and noted that graduates of the COT program have previously been hired by the district.
Next steps include submitting final documentation to the state for program approval and monitoring initial enrollment and internship placements as the year begins.
