Monterey County Free Libraries to reopen Gonzales branch at community center on Feb. 28

Christopher Gallegos, a 20‑year county libraries staffer, announced that the Gonzales Library will hold a grand reopening Saturday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Dennis and Janice Caprera Community Center in Gonzales.

Gallegos said the library move establishes a formal partnership with the City of Gonzales and places the branch in a multiuse facility that also houses a classroom called the teen innovation center and a teen lounge. "We're essentially part of an ecosystem now," he said, describing adjacent amenities such as an amphitheater, outdoor lawn, and spaces for programming.

The branch will emphasize youth access and programming, Gallegos said, noting closer proximity to Gonzales High School and other nearby schools that removes a previously unsafe crossing for students. For the grand opening and ongoing service, the library plans demonstrations and hands‑on activities — including 3‑D printing demos, face painting and toddler activities — as well as recurring programs such as weekly story time (Wednesdays at noon), tech help appointments (Fridays) and summer‑style performances throughout the year.

Gallegos said the library will coordinate with existing local programs — including Boys & Girls Club and city homework help — and that staff will greet visitors and explain services. He said the branch has planned programming calendars six months in advance and will continue to expand offerings based on community input gathered through outreach and school visits.

Pascoli encouraged local media to attend the grand opening and thanked Gallegos and Monterey County Free Libraries staff for their community work.
