Fairfield Union honors state cross-country champions; boosters donate $15,000 to cut ticket prices

Fairfield Union Local School District on Monday night recognized its 2024 Division II state cross-country champions and individual medalists, presented legislative commendations and accepted a $15,000 gift from the district's athletic boosters to lower student ticket prices.
Board President Tammy Conrad Zangmeister opened the recognitions and Superintendent Bill Belleville called the season a highlight for the district, asking the audience to stay for a planned presentation later in the meeting. Principal McPhail introduced coach Rob Myers, who credited his staff and athletes for developing a team culture he summarized as “row the boat,” meaning every runner contributes to the program's success.
Coach Myers named the boys and girls varsity rosters and singled out Drew (Andrew) Walton, the individual Division II state champion and a back-to-back state winner, and county middle-school standout Sadie Schultz, who won the middle-school individual title. "They want to be here because they want to be a part of it," Myers said of his athletes.
State lawmakers delivered written resolutions at the meeting. A member of the Ohio House and a member of the Ohio Senate read texts congratulating the team for compiling a team score of 88 to win the Division II crown; the resolutions named Walton as the state champion and praised Schultz for her middle-school title. County commissioners Steve Davis and Dave Lehi read a county proclamation and presented individual certificates to team members and alternates.
Angie Young, president of the Fairfield Union Athletic Boosters, announced a $15,000 donation intended to reduce student ticket prices at athletic events. "We hope we put a dent into that and we are just very proud to be able to do that and salute you all," Young said.
The board paused for a brief intermission after the recognitions and then continued the regular agenda, which included multiple personnel actions and a detailed five-year financial forecast.
The district and board will host a ring ceremony for the boys team at a future basketball game in February to present state championship rings that the athletes helped design. No formal policy actions were taken on athletics funding beyond accepting the booster donation and issuing the recognitions.
