Board to reconvene policy committee to update code of conduct, consider streamlining manual

A district staff member told the Saranac Lake Central School District Board on Oct. 9 that the district’s code of conduct should be reviewed and updated in collaboration with students, teachers, parents, administrators and school safety personnel, and ultimately approved by the board.
The staff member proposed convening a policy committee and suggested using the district’s diversity, equity and inclusion committee as a final reviewer to apply an equity lens before board consideration. “The code of conduct should be developed in collaboration with student, teacher, administrator, and parent organizations, school safety personnel, and other school personnel,” the staff member said during the meeting.
Board members discussed streamlining the policy manual to retain the legally required policies identified by the New York State School Boards Association and to prioritize safety‑related rules. Trustees expressed concern about creating gaps between removing and republishing policies and asked the administration to provide a prioritized list with last‑updated dates and to return with a plan in about two weeks.
What’s next: Administration will compile the legally required policy list, prioritize safety and compliance items, and bring a proposed timetable and committee plan back to the board.
