Dorchester School District 2 elects Ashley Wimberley as chair, approves committee appointments

Doctor Ashley Wimberley was elected board chair during Dorchester School District 2's Jan. 13 regular meeting, part of the board's annual reorganization.
Wimberley was nominated and approved by voice vote after the meeting was opened for the reorganization. The newly seated chair immediately moved to fill officer positions and committee slots. The board approved Kelly Bates as vice chair by a vote of 6 in favor, 1 abstention, and appointed Cynthia Powell board secretary. Justin Farnsworth will chair the facilities committee and continue serving on related capital planning work, and Guthrie will continue as finance chair with newly seated member Lee joining that committee.
The appointments also included rotating the DD2 Educational Foundation representative; Bates agreed to serve in that role for the year. Chair Wimberley framed the appointments as a way to keep momentum on district priorities and asked members to sign the board's ethical principles poster following the reading of the state board-member ethical principles.
The meeting opened with a gubernatorial proclamation that declared January 2025 School Board Recognition Month and recognized the role of local school boards. The board also paused to recognize 34 Coastal Carolina Fair Youth Art Award winners from across DD2 schools; staff called winners forward by school to receive certificates and photos.
The reorganization concluded with the chair's report listing upcoming events, including the South Carolina School Boards Association convention and a superintendent state-of-the-district event scheduled for Jan. 30 at 9 a.m., and with an announcement of planned public town halls beginning Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the district office.
The board then moved on to the night's remaining agenda items.
