UVA Wise and Virginia Tech report regional programming, leadership and education initiatives

Representatives from UVA Wise and Virginia Tech updated trustees on regional programs aimed at workforce and educator pipelines, leadership development and local economic study work.
Randy Rose, associate vice chancellor with UVA Wise, reviewed community and economic development programming and promoted LEAD SWVA, a seven‑month regional leadership cohort that will begin with the region's economic forum and culminate in a graduation at the Higher Ed Center. He said UVA Wise is expanding graduate offerings and is coordinating with the Center on academic and workforce initiatives.
Allison Mays, director of the Virginia Tech Southwest Center, reported on a successful Virginia Small Towns Conference held at the Center earlier in June with roughly 100 participants, a Wellspring Foundation‑funded educator recruitment and retention study in four counties, plans for a pilot AgSTEM Academy (school‑to‑farm STEM experiences), and a Virginia Creeper Trail economic impact study adapted to evaluate Hurricane Elaine impacts; Mays noted a two‑page report on that study was released the same day.
Both presenters asked trustees to support and amplify the initiatives regionally and noted opportunities to leverage Center partnerships to expand program reach and participant access.
