Rio Rancho Parks department readies for summer: camps, pools and lifeguard hiring

Connie Peterson, director of Parks and Recreation, told the commission that summer program registration opened the previous Monday and many camps across five community centers were nearly full.
Peterson gave dates for facilities: outdoor pools are scheduled to open May 25 and indoor aquatic center hours will shift after Memorial Day on May 28. In addition, deputy director Noah reported a lifeguard training that attracted 31 participants and described active hiring for seasonal positions and camp counselors across five sites.
Peterson said summer camps serve children roughly ages 8–12 and include traditional and nontraditional sports, cooperative games, arts and crafts, field trips and swim time. Staff emphasized safety and that the camps have been a recurring offering for more than 30 years.
The department said more staffing remains to be hired (three seasonal openings and two lead positions under recruitment) and asked commissioners to refer residents to the summer brochure and registration pages for program details.
